Mosquito Trapping Season

June 16, 2025

Mosquito Trapping Season Has Begun

As temperatures rise, mosquito activity increases and so does the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus. That's why our team at NNPHD has officially kicked off mosquito trapping season.

What is mosquito trapping?

Mosquito trapping is a surveillance tool we use to:

  • Monitor mosquito populations
  • Identify mosquito species
  • Test for viruses like West Nile

Special traps are placed around the health district in areas where mosquitoes are likely to be active. These traps don't harm the environment or attract large swarms- they help us gather samples safely and effectively.

Why is it important?

Not all mosquitoes carry disease, but some species can transmit viruses that cause serious illness in people and animals. By tracking where and when these mosquitoes are active, we can:

  • Detect virus early
  • Warn the public about increased risk
  • Target mosquito control efforts more effectively

How you can help

You play an important role in mosquito prevention! Here are a few things you can do:

  • Dump standing water from containers like buckets, birdbaths, flowerpots, and gutters
  • Wear insect repellent and protective clothing when outdoors
  • Repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home

NNPHD has FREE DEET wipes and mosquito dunks at our office!
